When camping hot dogs are a simple eating option, however, they get old fast. Having a campfire recipe like this garlic grilled cheese pie iron recipe is nice to have.

This could be made in a cast iron skillet over the fire if you need to make them faster for a crowd. I made mine in a cast iron pie iron. They do also make double pie irons so you could cook two at a time.

This campfire recipe was made using Munster cheese. It could also be made with provolone, mozzarella or even a Havarti cheese. Really just about any milder cheese would work.

Premake Garlic Butter:

While you can make your garlic butter right at camp, I find it best to make it ahead of time. Then simply store it in an airtight container that you can toss in the cooler.

By making it before you go, it just makes cooking at camp easier and speeds up the process. Plus it makes for fewer things you have to pack as you won’t need the ingredients for the butter mix.

The butter is just made from real butter (could use a butter substitute but real taste better) minced garlic and parsley flakes.

If you don’t want to take the time to peel and mince fresh garlic, you can get the pre-Jared kind. It works just as well and saves a little time.

How To Make This Garlic Grilled Cheese Pie Iron Recipe:

First things first. You need to get a good fire going so it has time to build up some hot coals.

Next, butter two slices of sandwich bread. I used a low cal high fiber white bread for mine. Then place one slice butter down in the pie iron.

Put both slices of cheese on top of the bread in the pie iron. Then place the other slice of butter bread on top of the cheese. Be sure to have the butter side facing the outside so it will touch the other half the pie iron when you close it.

Close the iron and hold it over the campfire and hot coals. You want to cook it for about five minutes. But in that five minutes you want to flip it over a few times to it cooks evenly and does not burn.

You can carefully open the pie iron to see if it is golden enough to your liking. If it is, then it is done.

Removing From Pie Iron Tip:

One of the most challenging parts I have found is removing it from the pie iron. The iron will be super HOT so you can not just lay it on most tables or plates.

One thing I have found that makes this step a little easier is to carry a scrap piece of board with me. That way I can lay the hot iron right on it and don’t have to worry about melting or burning anything.

Lay it on the board and open the iron. If it sticks, you can use a metal fork or knife to help remove it.

How To Clean The Pie Iron:

I know one question that is asked often after making a pie iron recipe is how do you clean it?

Cleaning a pie iron is pretty much the same as any other cast iron care. You give it a good washing (and use I use soap on my cast iron) just don’t let it soak in water.

You can use a cast iron cleaner or a stainless steel scouring pad to scrub off any hard to remove cooked on food.

After you have it clean, rinse it off and dry it right away. Then using a cloth or paper towel, apply a light coat of oil to the iron. This keeps it from rusting.

The more seasoned your iron gets, the less food will stick to it.
